Beginners

Widening your range in early position.

The right approach for most poker beginners is to keep things simple, and play tight. This is especially true when opening the pot from early position. After a little while, and after having gained some experience, it is very tempting to widen your range of hand a little bit. This is especially important when migrating from short-stack to deep-stack, as when playing deep, having too tight a range in early position will invariably lead to tricky situations postflop.
Many ‘advanced-beginners’ understand the need to widen their range, but get it wrong when selecting the additional hands they should include in their range.

A good way to learn poker is to analyze mistakes. For beginners, learning to avoid large mistakes is the first step to poker expertise. Luckily, there are now hours of televised poker available. Today's example is taken from the Aussie Million cash game. You can find the video here.

With blinds of 500$-1000$, Patrick Antonius open-raises to 3,500$ from late position with . A young player (who is unknown to me) called Robl reraises to 12,000$ from one of the blinds, holding . Antonius calls in position. Our two players started the hand with roughly 130,000$ effective stacks.

Prior to this hand, Negreanu has already been running quite bad. I think it is fair to say that he was badly tilted, and would have played the hand much better under normal conditions.Incidentally, this hand is a great exercise in hand reading.

With effecitve stacks of around 120k $, Negreanu open-raise to 2k$ with , and is called by Lindgren, holding . The flop comes .  Negreanu flopped the nuts, but Lindgren has flopped bottom set, a sure recipee for a large pot! Daniel bets 4k$ into a 5.7k$ pot, and gets a quick call from Lindgren.

While most of our series of article will focus on bad plays made by Negreanu (because bad plays are often more instructive than goodones), in this hand he used an interesting line. The video can be found here. We will only focus on play from the flop onwards in this hand. The flop comes , and the pot is 21,400$. Four player took the flop. After a check by Harman (), Antonio Esfandiari bet 14,000$ with . This bet is multi-purpose, giving him a chance to pick-up the pot right away, and protecting his meager middle pair against the numerous draws out there. Farha quickly folds the , but things get interesting when Negreanu calls with .

While the loose-passive style is typical of beginners, it paradoxically creates many problems for aggressive players. More often than not, more advanced players have forgotten how to fight that LP style. In the first part of the article, we will define the LP style, and in the second part, consider some profitable adjustments against that style.

In No-Limit poker, continuation betting is a complex subject. Many parameters should be taken into account when deciding whether or not to make a C-bet. In Limit Hold'em, things are much simpler, and you should C-bet almost always when facing only a single opponent. Let's see why.
